The edition was published by Texte zur Kunst, Cologne (issue no. 32). It was created in connection with the commissioned work "Schwarz, Rot, Gold", which the artist produced in 1999 for the German Bundestag in the Reichstag building in Berlin (cf. cat. rais. no. 856).
"From a selection by Gerhard Richter of four shades of black, four shades of red and four shades of gold, two times each 64 different colour combinations were created. The three-digit number on the sheet indicates, which of the specific colour tones were used for the collage." The number 343 on the present work represents the third of the four blacks, the fourth tone of the four reds
and the third of the four blacks. Thus, each copy of the (2 x) 64 collages shows an individual colouration.
